Discover Mahatma Gandhi Residence

The Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad was the center of many events that played a major role in Indian independence. Perfectly located on the banks of the famous Sabarmati River,   Mahatma Gandhi made Sabarmati Ashram his home on 12th March 1930 and from here he sowed the seeds of non violent revolution in the heart of millions of Indians. Mahatma Gandhi preferred this serene location on the banks of the Sabarmati River for a number of reasons.

Visit Sidi Sayiad Mosque

Built in 1573 by a slave of Sultan Ahmed Shah - Sidi Sayed, the mosque is one of the most historical attractions of Ahmedabad. Sidi Sayed mosque in Ahmedabad, India consists of ten semi circular windows, which is beautified by the splendid mesh covering them, which is more popularly known as 'Jali'. This monument has gained a worldwide recognition, due to its splendor. This skillfully carved mosque is truly the one of its kinds in the whole world.

Explore the polygonal Kankaria Lake

Spectacular and totally fascinating, this lake is one of Ahmedabad's most popular attractions. The Kankaria lake was founded by Sultan Qutb-ud-Din in 1451 and has 34 sides and a circumference of up to one mile. The lake is a popular recreational center with parks, aquariums, a boat club, a museum, zoo and a toy train which takes you on a slow trip round the sides of the lake.

During summer, the weather is extremely hot and dry with temperates going up to 43 - 47 degrees celsius.

Getting Around

The efficient ways of traveling around Ahmedabad:

Rickshaw:  You can take the Yellow and Green three-wheeled taxicabs known as the Autorickshaws or Rickshaws. The drivers understand some basic words of English and are known to be mostly honest and quite helpful. Taxis are not too common around here, but you can book them at the airports or railway stations. 

Buses: Known as the AMTS/BRTS, they have several bus stands in the city which will take you to various parts of the city. The major station in Ahmedabad is Idgah Station and private buses/coaches can also be hired. If you want to use these buses you should either know some words in Gujarati or ask local people to help you. Take care of of your luggage when boarding these buses as they are mostly overcrowded.

Ahmedabad railway station holds as a junction with railway lines emerging towards Mumbai, Delhi, Saurashtra and Kutch.

Night Life

Ahmedabad is one of the few Indian cities where there are restrictions of alcohol consumption, so nightlife here is not as vibrant as Mumbai and Delhi. Notwithstanding, there are still some few spots where you can have some really nice time. Searching for where you can catch all the night buzz and parties, then the Cyclone Discotheque at the R3 Mall is a good spot for that. For the hookah lovers, Arena is the ideal place, you can also get some mocktails and snacks to munch on.

 

Shopping

The city is also renowned for its shopping joints. Its a big place when it comes to shopping for fabrics, furnitures, antiques, jewelries and many more. There are also big shopping malls for that that total shopping experience.
