Novosibirsk is the third most populous city in Russia. It’s the largest municipal entity in the Russian Federation.Novosibirsk is the business-center of Siberia, as well as a major transportation junction with the waterways lying through the Ob River and a scientific center called the Akademgorodok  ifounded in the 1950s.


Originally called Novonikolayevsk in honour of both saint Nicholas and Tsar Nicholas II, it cemented its place as a large industrial center during the Stalin Period. Today it’s a beautiful place booming  with cultural life. A slew of museums and monuments, a  relaxed big city vibe, pulsating nightlife and a wealth of a great accommodation are available to visitors.

Activities

Never worry about the language barrier, there are but a few places you will be able to find a translated version of information you are interested in. Nevertheless, visitors can still have a great time exploring the city.


The theatre is the traditionally significant in Novosibirsk, the most important theatre is undoubtedly the the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. That’s not all the Central Siberian Botanical gardens is a chance to see nature at its best, with its relatively undisturbed conditions.
A part of the huge Novosibirsk zoo goes deeply into the woods, so it is pleasant to walk there. The Zoo is proud to present to the visitors its collection of weasels and cat family species such as the Liger.


Art lovers can get their fix at the Regional Museum of local culture and History, as well as other exhibitons around the city.

Climate

The climate in Novosibirsk and its surburbs is continental. Want to know how cold the winters are? It can be quite cold falling as low as -20°C. Travellers coming from countries with mild climate may find the winters tough. The best time to visit is during the summer (May to September).

Almost all restaurants offer the so-called business lunches on workdays at the time when Russians have lunch, which is approximately from 1 pm to 4 pm. Basically, it means that one can order a substantial meal for the price of one hundred and fifty up to two hundred rubles. Any other time, an ordinary dinner without alcoholic beverages costs from two or three hundred rubles per person, but the prices may vary significantly in different places. There is also an economical option of eating at canteens at the approximate price of one hundred rubles. The local citizens prefer to cook food at home.

Kids Attractions

In 2012, Novosibirsk gained a new point of interest. On February 8, 2012, on the Day of Russian Science, the Planetarium Children’s and Youth Center was opened.

The official language is Russian but you will  find some English speaking spots around the city. Most of the people under 40 speak English.

Money

The official currency is the Ruble.


All cash operations in Russia are maintained in rubles. One can always find the current exchange rate at the main page of our website. Practically every bank provides the service of exchanging foreign currency to rubles and vice versa. However, one should be prepared to show the passport and the customs declaration when exchanging one currency for another. The exchange rate can be usually found on the display near the entrance of the bank. Many shops as well as the overwhelming majority of restaurants accept Visa and Mastercard cards, whereas American Express cards and those of a local bank card association Zolotaya Korona (The Golden Crown) are accepted less frequently.

Negatives

While it's better to stay away from some run-down areas the overall situation is not bad. Pervomayskiy rayon and far-off neighborhoods of Leninskiy and Kirovskiy rayons should be avoided at any time. The safest place is the center (nearby Lenin Square), stay there and you will be all right.

Shopping

You can shop for alcoholic beverages to Tobacco which is easily found everywhere. In contrast to many European cities, there is a relatively large twenty-four-hour grocery shop in every block of Novosibirsk. Apart from food, one may purchase personal-care products, household chemistry, crockery, the printed press, and some minor household goods such as bulbs and electric batteries. Moreover, large malls found in the distant city areas provide a wide choice of goods and products for cheaper prices.

You could have a lot of fun if you go to markets like Central Market "Baraholka". There you'll see people from around the world selling stuff that is not brand but it may have a good quality.

Sightseeing

The city’s points of interest include more than a dozen museums the Novosibirsk Art Gallery, Botanic Garden, and a unique scientific institution for educational, cultural and recreation purposes-a zoological park that has no analogues in the Siberian region. In 2016 the Novisibirsk Zoo celebrates its 69th anniversary.
