Kaliningrad is the capital of the Kaliningrad oblast (region) in the Russian Federation. The exclave was part of Germany until its annexation by the Soviet Union (USSR) during the World War II in 1945 and was historically known as Koenigsberg (from 1255 till 1946). The city was once the capital of East Prussia.

Kaliningrad is closer to Berlin and Prague than it is to Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is the only Russian Baltic Sea port that is ice-free all year round and hence plays an important role in maintenance of the Baltic Fleet. It is also one of the 11 host cities of the FIFA World Cup 2018.

Climate

Getting Around

Getting around Kaliningrad is actually pretty simple. The city has a very efficient public transportation which includes bus, minibus, trolleybus and tram networks. The best way to explore the city is either by Bus or by Foot as most of the attractions is located within reachable distance.

  • Amber Museum: The Kaliningrad Amber Museum is a museum located in the Russian city of Kaliningrad devoted to housing and displaying amber artworks. It is located in the city center, on the shore of Lake Verkhneye.

Language

The Russian language is spoken by more than 95% of Kaliningrad population. English is understood by many people. While German culture plays a long historical role in the region the language is spoken by few. - Wikipedia

Money

The Russian currency is called the Ruble or Rouble (RUB). Notes come in denominations of 5000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, and 10 Rubles, and there are 10, 5, 2 and 1 Ruble coins. One Ruble equals 100 kopeks which come in 50 and 10 kopek coins.

Currency can be exchanged at banks or you can withdraw currency at a bank machine using your ATM card. Currency exchange rate does not vary a lot, so you will see pretty much the same numbers in the different banks.

Night Life

Kaliningrad blends the best of Russia with European tastes and styles. Kaliningrad's nightlife is a melting pot of its surrounding cultures and offers a vibrant and enjoyable evening for party lovers visiting the city.

One of the most popular places to start a night out in Kaliningrad is at Britannica, a centrally located bar and restaurant. Offering a mixture of locally brewed and international beer, the bar also serves some of the best priced steaks in the city centre. The Fish Club is another popular choice with tourists looking to dine out prior to enjoying Kaliningrad's nightlife, with it offering an exciting range of seafood specialities.

Vagonka is one of the city's largest clubs and located in the hub of Kaliningrad's nightlife. Visited by both locals and tourists alike, it frequently stages live music and DJs across its two levels. Olsthyn and Planeta are two of Kaliningrad's other major nightclubs and offer a range of cocktails and dance music until the early morning in the city centre.

Shopping

The majority of Kaliningrad shopping is focussed on its central districts, which house an array of local and foreign shops and products. The main Kaliningrad shopping artery is located in the Leininsky area between Victory and Palace Square.

Kaliningrad Plaza, one of the city's first modern shopping malls, hosts a chain of designer fashion stores alongside electronic specialists and a cinema. The nearby Clover shopping centre is also popular with tourists and contains stores by Sephora, Gino Rossi and Svyaznoy amongst others.
