Often regarded as the unofficial capital city of Southern Russia, Krasnodar is one of the best cities to visit and live in Russia. The historical and cultural city is so green that walking through the main feels like a stroll in the park as the streets are properly lined with enough trees creating an eco-friendly city.

Geographically, the city stands on the right bank of the Kuban River, about 120-150 km from the Black and Azov Seas, 1,340 km south of Moscow. The city is located in the temperate climate zone and the average temperature in January is plus 0.6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 24.1 degrees Celsius.

Visitors wanting to travel to the city can visit by air as there is an international airport located in the eastern part of the city. For a more scenic entrance into the city, visitors can opt for comfortable train rides from Moscow.

Walk around on Red Street and explore Krasnodar like a local. The Red street also known as Krasnanya is the main street of the city and in the evening, part of the street is closed to traffic which allows people walk around and window-shop comfortably. At night, Krasnanya becomes a buzzing center of nightlife with numerous cafes, bars and restaurants which offer you leisure welcome. The street also hosts a spectacular fountain show which is regarded as the largest in Europe.

Climb the steel lattice hyperboloid tower built by Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov in 1928. The tower likely wouldn't pass a safety inspection in most first world countries, but it is the best place to get a view of the city. The tower is near the circus.

For lovers of history and arts, the city boasts of numerous museums and monuments scattered all around the city. The museums include;

  • The Krasnodar Regional Art Museum Of Kovalenko,  13 Krasnaya St. 
  • Krasnodar Regional Showroom of Fine Arts,  Krasnodar Regional Showroom of Fine Arts. Includes many famous works of Kuban and Russian and European artists from as early as 16th century. 
  • Museum of Military Technologies Oruzhie Pobedy,  Krasina. Popular with kids that like to climb on the tanks.

  • Monument to Catherine the Great
  • Sculpture of Walking Dogs - Mira 35 - Built in 2007, it was inspired by a famous Russian poet that commented on the number of dogs in Krasnodar.
  • Monument to Shurik and Lida
  • Monument of Cossacks writing a letter to the Turkish Sultan
  • Monument to Kuban Cossacks
  • Monument Avrora


In Krasnodar, the summers are warm and mostly clear and the winters are very cold, windy, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 25°F to 87°F and is rarely below 8°F or above 96°F.

Eating Out

Krasnodar has many restaurants, pubs, eateries, sushi bars, hookah bars, pizzerias, coffee/tea houses and fast food places. The predominant Krasnodar cuisine is a mix of south Russian, Georgian, Armenian and Greek flavors with emphasis on fresh local grown produce minimally spiced and mostly flavored by parsley, dill and cilantro.

There are also popular fast food outlets such as Subway (5/2 Zipovskaya St, 149 Krasnaya St, 39 Krainyaya St, 38 Mira St), McDonald's (100 Dzerzhinsky St), and KFC (104 Uralskaya St)

Getting Around

If you want to go around by public transport, Krasnodar has a dense network of trams, trolleybuses, city buses, taxis, the boat across the Kuban river and marshrutkas. Public transport fees are generally approximately RUB30.


The official language is Russian but you will find some English speaking spots around the city.


The rouble has remained relatively stable against the US$ (26 roubles) and the GBP (52 roubles) in 2007. Euros, US Dollars and travel checks like American Express at the exchange offices which are numerous in the city, but GB Pounds are less easily exchanged outside Moscow. Roubles cannot be taken out of Russia at the time of writing and are therefore not readily available for exchange outside the country. Besides that there are also the ATM machines mostly in banks' offices that accept credit cards of Visa and MasterCard.
