Founded in 1586 as a fortress protecting the Volga trade route, Samara is a city situated on the east bank of the Volga River in European Russia. It is the administrative center of the Samara Oblast; sixth biggest city in Russia; center of the Russian aerospace industry and one of the country’s major economic, transport, scientific, educational, and cultural center.

Known in the past as Kuybyshev (from 1935 to 1991), Samara is one of the major industrial cities of Russia and has a multi-ethnic population. The metropolitan area of Samara-Tolyatti-Syzran within Samara Oblast contains a population of over three million.

The city a major transport hub thanks to its international airport, major railway station and busy river port. It is served by the Kurumoch International Airport, which handles flights throughout Russia and Central Asia and to Frankfurt, Prague, Helsinki and Dubai. The airport also serves Tolyatti – the second largest city in the region.

Samara is one of the 12 host cities of the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The Samara Arena (Cosmos Arena), with a capacity of 44,918 spectators, will host up to 6 matches of the world cup and will replace the Metallurg Stadium as the home ground FC Krylia Sovetov Samara of the Russian Premier League.

Majority of the population are Russians (90%) while the rest are Tatars, Ukrainians, Chuvash, etc. The city has a continental climate characterised by hot summers and cold winters. It is also a multi-confessional city where you can find Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant churches as well as that of the Old Believers, Muslim mosques, Jewish synagogues and other religious institutions.

The city has a temperate continental climate. Most precipitation falls here in June, July and September. The average annual temperature is +5.6 °C. Getting Around

You can get around major Russian cities by taxi, public transport or car hire. Taxis are generally not expensive and are readily available in larger cities. The public transport system in Russia runs an extensive network of buses, trolleybuses and trams. You can also hire a car from one of several international car hire firms available. It is also possible to hire a car with a driver in some of the country's major cities.


Of all the languages of Russia, Russian is the only official language at the national level. 


Like the rest of Russia, Samara’s official currency is the Ruble or Rouble (RUB).

Notes come in denominations of 5000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, and 10 Rubles, and there are 10, 5, 2 and 1 Ruble coins. One Ruble equals 100 kopeks which come in 50 and 10 kopek coins. 


Samara, like major Russian cities, has numerous shopping malls featuring all of the latest brands and fashions. Some of the popular malls include: Iceberg, Vivaland, and Megacity.


Samara's riverfront is considered one of the favourite recreation places both for local citizens and tourists. Other places of interest for visitors include the massive 37-metre deep Stalin’s bunker and the beautiful nature preserve, Zhigulevskie Hills, on the Volga River.


Samara Time Zone (SAMT) is four hours ahed of the UTC (UTC+4) and 1 hour ahead of Moscow Time (MSK+1). Samara Time is used in Samara Oblast, Udmurtia, Astrakhan Oblast, Ulyanovsk Oblast and Saratov Oblast.
