Situated near the international border between Russia and Georgia, Sochi is a city located on Russia's coast along the shores of Black Sea, in the federal subject of Krasnodar Krai. It is situated near the border between Georgia/Abkhazia and Russia, and about 1,600km south of the capital, Moscow.

Informally known as the ‘Summer Capital of Russia’, Sochi is also Russia's largest resort city and one of the host cities of the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Back in 2014, Sochi hosted the 22nd Winter Olympic Games and the Winter Paralympics which took place from 7th to 23rd February, 2014.

The Fisht Olympic Stadium hosted the 2014 Olympics and will also be used to host 2018 FIFA World Cup football matches. Fisht is the only stadium to have hosted Winter Olympics and matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Sochi enjoys a pleasant climate, with warm summers and mild winters. It has an ethnic Russian majority (~70%) and a sizeable Armenian minority (~20%). The vast majority of the population live in a narrow strip along the coast and organized into independent microdistricts.

Sochi is a predominantly Christain city, though about 5% of the inhabitants (about 20,000) are Muslims.

Sochi has a humid subtropical climate[18][19] with mild winters (average 11 °C (52 °F) during the day and 4 °C (39 °F) at night) in the period from December to March and warm summers (average 24 °C (75 °F) during the day and 16 °C (61 °F) at night) in the period from May to October.

Getting Around

When going around Sochi, it is better to use the city’s public transport system which comprises of the city buses, mini-buses, taxis and electric trains. Some distances can even be covered by Foot. 


Of all the languages of Russia, Russian is the only official language at the national level. 


Like the rest of Russia, Sochi’s official currency is the Ruble or Rouble (RUB).

Notes come in denominations of 5000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, and 10 Rubles, and there are 10, 5, 2 and 1 Ruble coins. One Ruble equals 100 kopeks which come in 50 and 10 kopek coins. 


Krasnodar Krai is probably one of Southern Russia's most safe regions. Sochi does not stand out with the higher crime rate, but standard safety precautions should be used. There is a saying in Russia: "Nights are dark in Sochi" and this can be explained as that anyone or anything can get lost in the city. - Wikipedia

Most of the shopping centers (malls and shops) in Sochi are located in the city centre. MoreMall is the largest and probabky the most upscale mall in the cith where all the typical brands and types of shoes can be found.


Being a resort town, sightseeing in Sochi is less about cultural and historical attractions and more about recreational fun, with spas, malls, parks and sporting facilities often taking central stage. The city’s opular atttractions include:
