The big draws are its imposing neo-Gothic cathedral – the largest in Argentina – and a famous building designed by Le Corbusier, his only completed work in Latin America.
Among the many tourist attractions in La Plata, the ones which stand out are the Cathedral opposite the Moreno Square are the best known. Visitors would make their visit truly memrobale by paying a visit to the Natural Sciences Museum which is considered the fifth most important in the world, and the beautiful Ciudad de los Ninos: the children’s city for sum family fun.
Nature lovers can also visit the Pereyra Iraola Park or the Paseo del Bosque which houses an observatory and a zoo. Other fun activities to engage include Jet skiing, windsurfing, sailing and a bustling night life.
The city of La Plata has the particularity of being the only place (with Berisso and Ensenada) in the country where the burning of Momos (Dolls similar to those cremated at the Fallas festival in Valencia, Spain) is held every New Year's Eve. Hundreds of dolls are burnt to celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of a new year. Climate
The climate in this region is mild with an annual average temperature of 17 ºC with abundant humidity since it is a few kilometers away from River Plate. Characterized by a humid subtropical climate, the winters are cool, with july being the coldest. the best time to visit id between January and April. The average humidity is of 77.6% and the predominant southeast winds blow during four months in the year. Summers are hot and humid while winters are cool and cloudy.
Light clothing is recommended for guests in the summer. Warm clothing should also be packed as it can get cold in the winter season.
Eating Out
Parrilla’s (Steakhouse or BBQ) is king here with Club Atenas on top of our list. The steaks are fantastic and whatever combination you eventually settle for, you really cannot go wrong. Eating out is relatively cheap at La Plata.
In the courthouse parking lot every Saturday and Wednesday, local farmers set up vendor booths to distribute locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers in season. In the winter, market vendors sell non-local products. Artisans sell their handmade artwork, including photography, jewelry, textiles and home decor items. Resident baker Mrs. Bowling is one of the most consistent vendors, selling loaves of fresh-baked breads. The selection changes constantly, depending upon what's in season and which vendors set up shop.
Getting Around
La Plata is easy to navigate because of its distinct and meticulously planned grid system. You can easily walk from one side of the city to another within an hour. Taxis are plentiful and cheap but the confusing diagonal avenues often make taxi drivers to take the long route in order to rack up the meter charges.The city bus; Micro are cheap and reliable and take only coins.
Kids Attractions
Museo de los Niños is actually a miniature city that has been built on the entire upper floor of Buenos Aires’ Abasto Shopping centre, one of Buenos Aires’ best shopping malls. Your kids can pretend to be bus drivers, TV presenters, doctors, cooks, builders and more, and there’s a variety of toys for them to play with. Getting there is easy: just hop on a taxi or take the Subte (subway) line B and get off at the station Carlos Gardel, where escalators will take you straight up to the shopping centre. The kids activities in the Children’s Museum are a great way to keep the kids entertained while you pop off to do some shopping.
República de los Niños makes for a perfect Buenos Aires family day out for travellers with a little more time during their vacation in Buenos Aires, wanting to discover more of the Province of Buenos Aires. The Republica de los Niños lies in the city of La Plata (about 55 km form the centre of Buenos Aires). We recommend putting aside a whole day to visit this park, as it will keep your kids entertained for hours! The theme park has a miniature city, including mini replicas of governmental buildings in Argentina where children can learn more about life in Argentina, a petting zoo and rides. To get there you can take the bus to La Plata, which leaves from Retiro’s bus terminal or take a train from Constitución train station.

Night Life
Every summer, the Friday night free concert series at the La Plata Town Hall draws a crowd of picnickers, music fans, food vendors and festive displays. Popcorn always is complimentary. Visitors are advised to bring a blanket or their own chairs. The venue is family-friendly and the music changes every week. Folk music, country, jazz, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues have been featured
Restaurants
Ceramics, Handicrafts and Sports Apparel are on offer to guest willing or you can visit the popular bookshops. In the past they were called, “Librería de Viejo”, now, “Librería de Usados”. All these bookshops have the same layout. In the middle of the room there is a big, rectangular table with books on offer. And on the shelves against the walls, there are difficult to find books, old editions or luxurious bindings. You are not going to find there the latest books of publishing companies but books that have been sold by their owners because of trips, house moving, death, desire to renew, etc.
Sightseeing
The Natural History Museum is the highlight of the city - contains numerous (some huge) dinosaur skeletons, a detailed exploration of the numerous pre-Columbian cultures in south America, and other world class exhibits. The museum isn't quite up there with its cousins in New York or London - but it is not far off. A$6 (A$2 more to take photos). Located in the green parks north of the city centre.
The Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes has recently reopened after its recent refurbishment. Small exhibition space displaying temporary contemporary art exhibitions. Ave 51 near Plaza San Martin. Free.
