Virgin Atlantic and British Airways waives date change fee amidst coronavirus outbreak

Coronavirus outbreaks around the world have made holidaymakers reconsider their travel plans, with some airlines forced to cancel flights and plenty of uncertainty as to what it means for future holidays.
However, Virgin Atlantic has announced that until the end of March, it will be waiving its 'change fee' on flights - meaning that if passengers decide they want to change their flight date, they can do so for free.

The offer will be available for tickets booked between the 4th-31st March 2020, and will include for travel up to (and including) the 30th September 2020.

The policy will apply to all routes across Virgin Atlantic's network - including tickets booked on codeshare flights such as with Delta, Air France and KLM.

However, the policy only applies if you are opting to change the date of travel, not for cancellations.

If there's a coronavirus outbreak at your destination and the FCO doesn't advise against travel, you may be subject to a fee if you choose to cancel the trip.

If the FCO does advise against travel and your flight is cancelled, you won't be left out of pocket - in this scenario, you are entitled to a full refund, a free replacement flight to your final destination, or a free replacement flight at a later date, such as when the restrictions are lifted.

Earlier this week, British Airways announced a similar policy, for new bookings made between the 3rd-16th March.

Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer, Virgin Atlantic, said: "We understand that with evolving travel advice, some of our customers may wish to build in some flexibility to upcoming travel plans. "Putting our customers first, this new policy enables them to continue with their Virgin Atlantic booking this month, with the peace of mind that there is the option to change their flight at a later date, without incurring a fee."
